Nourishing East LA through the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program

At the East LA Farmers Market, we take immense pride in our commitment to supporting the community through the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).

This initiative not only promotes healthier eating habits but also supports local farmers and the economy. The WIC program stands for Women, Infants, and Children, and is dedicated to providing nutritional support to vulnerable groups within our community.

Understanding the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)

The FMNP serves women, infants over 4 months old, and children aged 1 to 5 years. Eligible WIC participants receive FMNP checks in addition to their regular WIC benefits. These coupons can be used to purchase eligible foods directly from farmers, farmers’ markets, or approved roadside stands. This ensures that fresh, locally-grown produce is accessible to those who need it most.

Significant Impact Through Community Partnerships

Our success is amplified through our valuable partnerships with Hunger Action LA and PHFE WIC. Together, we have made a substantial impact on the lives of many families in East LA.

  • Hunger Action LA has provided $36,890 in WIC Plus funds, allowing each family to receive an additional $20.

  • PHFE WIC has contributed $47,820 in WIC Checks, with each parent receiving $30.

  • In total, each family benefits from an additional $50, significantly enhancing their ability to purchase nutritious foods.

“This summer, we partnered with Eastmont Community Center having welcomed over 1600 WIC Families and drawing in over $80,000 into the local economy while supporting local farmers. There were many, many smiling faces and happy families expressing gratitude and positive experiences at the East LA Farmers Market.” - Denise Gee, PHFE WIC Deputy Director

Voices from the Community

The impact of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program is deeply felt by the families it serves. One participant shared:

"The Farmers Market Nutrition Program has been a game-changer for my family. We now have access to fresh fruits and vegetables that we couldn't afford before. My kids are eating healthier, and I feel more connected to our community."

This testimonial reflects the transformative power of the FMNP, which not only provides nutritional benefits but also fosters a sense of community and belonging.

As we celebrate these achievements, we remain dedicated to expanding our reach and impact. The East LA Farmers Market will continue to work with our partners to ensure that every family has access to the fresh, healthy food they deserve.

"We truly owe a great amount of gratitude to our friends at WIC and Hunger Action LA. I am glad my team was able to help make this WIC Farmers Market season a successful one." - Daniel Casillas, East LA Farmers Market Manager
