Eastmont Community Center Partners with ELAC to Promote Higher Education Opportunities for East LA Community

Eastmont Community Center (ECC) is excited to announce a new partnership with East Los Angeles College (ELAC) to help high school students and the community explore higher education opportunities. As part of this partnership, Jocelyn Campos from ELAC’s Outreach and Recruitment department will be hosting office hours at ECC every Monday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM until February 2025. This initiative aims to provide local students with guidance and information about ELAC’s programs and resources, with a special focus on early childhood education and general education courses.

Introducing the AS-T Early Childhood Education Program

One of the key programs being offered is the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) in Early Childhood Education. This program is particularly beneficial for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in child development. Currently, the program is available to students at Bell Gardens High School who are part of the ICARE program. While ICARE provides exposure to the Early Childhood field, it does not offer college credit.

However, the AS-T program at ELAC allows committed students to start earning college credits, making it a valuable step toward a future in childcare.

This program is ideal for students who are passionate about early childhood education and are looking to gain both academic knowledge and practical experience in the field. By enrolling in the AS-T program, students not only advance their education but also set the foundation for a seamless transfer to a four-year university to continue their studies.

Dual Enrollment through the Early College Program

In addition to the AS-T program, ELAC is offering information about its Early College Program, which allows high school students to enroll in general education college courses for free. This dual enrollment opportunity gives students a head start on their college education while still in high school, and all textbooks are included at no cost. Open to all high school students, this program is an excellent way to ease the transition into college while earning transferable credits.

Comprehensive Support for Students and Families

Jocelyn Campos will be available at ECC every Monday to provide support and guidance to students and community members. Her office hours will focus on:

  • Assisting students with the onboarding process at ELAC, including applications and next steps.

  • Offering information about ELAC’s wide range of programs and services, including ESL courses.

  • Collaborating with high school counselors and community workers to ensure that students, their families, and K-12 partners are well-informed about the educational opportunities available at ELAC.

  • Providing personalized advice on the different academic and career pathways available at ELAC, helping students navigate their options.

This partnership between ECC and ELAC underscores our shared commitment to promoting higher education awareness and helping local students take meaningful steps toward their academic and career goals.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about these programs, please visit ECC on Mondays to meet with Jocelyn Campos and take advantage of this incredible opportunity. We look forward to helping students in our community succeed!
